David Villa’s first M.L.S. hat trick helped New York City F.C. beat the Red Bulls, 3-2, at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night.

Villa has eight goals in his last eight matches, and he leads the league with 17, one more than Nemanja Nikolic of the Chicago Fire.

Villa’s last goal of the night gave N.Y.C.F.C. (12-7-4) the lead for good in the 75th minute. He drew a foul in the area — Sal Zizzo was shown a yellow card for a high boot — and then converted from the spot.

Villa opened the scoring in the 28th, beating the charging Red Bulls goalkeeper, Luis Robles, one-on-one and tapping a left-footer into the open net.
